New Collections arriving to Melbourne .

Below are some examples of unique Colombian jewellery arriving in Melbourne in mid- September. Be one of the first to have a pick at jewellery that is really quite different ! I also describe a little bit of Colombia for those of you who are yet to travel there.

COLOMBIA AND ITS CREATIVE PEOPLE

Colombia is a country that has been able to preserve its traditional Spanish and indigenous cultural heritage.

The people are very creative and hand-made handicrafts and jewellery are exported to all the world.

Artisans and designers have for a long time used natural materials when making jewellery. Long before it was both fashionable and desirable this was done  to preserve traditional occupations.

Colombian artisans are inspired by nature and their environment because Colombia has an array of climates and flora.  It is a tropical country surrounded by mountains (LOS ANDES) and borders two oceans, the Caribbean and the Pacific.  Colombia shares with Brazil the Amazon jungle region, which is one of the richest and most bio-diverse zones on the planet.


“EL ANGEL AZUL” (Designers and owners : CRISTINA BURBANO DAZA Y EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ )

“El ANGEL AZUL” ( BLUE ANGEL ) is  a Colombian jewellery business which takes inspiration from both nature and from some elements of Pre-Colombian heritage in order to create  exclusive and unique jewellery.

You will be able to admire below  some of the pieces I am importing  from “EL ANGEL AZUL”. For example, the necklaces  named  “ALUNA” are inspired by the moon and its different faces.  Other necklaces and bracelets called “JUNGLA” have been inspired by the Colombian  jungle and its bio-diversity.  The “ASTROMELIA “ pieces have been inspired by the flower Astromelia which is a typical of the Andean region of Colombia.

The necklaces called “ARRECIFE” have been inspired by the Colombian reefs with their  wonderful diverse colours.

Every piece of jewellery is entirely hand made.  The materials used by “EL ANGEL AZUL” include cotton threads, wood, leather, steel and some metals.

- BEAUTIFUL HANDMADE JEWELLERY FROM COLOMBIA -

 “Latin Style” is a small jewellery business .  I am the owner of Latin Style, and I import into Australia some Colombian beautiful hand-made jewellery , including short and long necklaces, earrings and bracelets. I generally travel once a year to Colombia and LatinAmerica in order to choose the jewellery.  My eldest sister, who is an economist, is my commercial agent in Colombia, and also helps me contacting new artisans, and organizing shipping to Australia.

The Jewellery

The jewellery that I import is  hand-made and designed by Colombian artisans. It is unique, as it is made with materials that are not commonly seen in Australia, such as palm seeds (“tagua beads”), snail shells, bull-horns, fiber from the coconut palm, straw and wood. Some of the jewellery is  made from a combination of silver and Colombian natural materials.

The Colombian jewellery that I sell ,  represent   an unique artistic expression, and a means of supporting  a tradition that is invaluable.  Let’s contribute to such a treasure !!

The following are some of the pieces that I sell.  The jewellery is very contemporary, exclusive and affordable.  The majority of  the jewellery is very colourful. In addition,  there are pieces in brown, and dark tones for the ladies which prefer such colours.  New pieces are arriving in mid-September.

The materials.

The materials used by the artisans to make the jewellery that I sell, do not damage the environment. On the contrary, as the majority of those natural materials are cultivated and harvested in a responsible way, they preserve the eco-system  ( in particular the Colombian rainforest ).

How some of the materials for the jewellery are harvested and made .

“Tagua”

For example, some of the necklaces, bracelets and rings are made of “tagua”. “Tagua” seeds come from a palm  tree that grows wild in the Colombian rainforest.  When these seeds fall , they are collected .  “Tagua” seeds are  white, although they are dyed in order to create jewellery of  diverse colours .   “Tagua” seeds are also very durable, and  completely natural.  For the latter reasons, “tagua” is called  the vegetable ivory. It is a material that is an alternative to plastic, and a natural sustainable alternative to animal ivory.
