Jewellery made of natural Fibres : “ Iraca” palm tree fibres.

Below you can view some of the jewellery made from “Iraca” palm fibres that I sell.

The largest plantations in Colombia are located in the State of Narino, in a locality  called Sandona. In Sandona 25% of the population  ( around 7,000 people) are employed directly and indirectly in  the production of fibre products such as  hats, rugs handbags and jewellery.  Therefore, the "production" of natural fibres  is another Colombian traditional occupation.

Jewellery made of bull horn

In Colombia, horn is used in the production of handmade jewellery as well as in the production of vases, containers and table utensils. It is a material that is recyclable and no  animals (bulls) have being killed or injured in its production .

Horn is a beautiful material that is durable, shiny and varies in colour and texture.  For example, after a long process of cleaning and polishing the horn, a unique piece of dark brown or even white horn can be created. Some of the horn pieces have minor texture imperfections because horn is a natural material.  It is the diversity of colours and textures that makes horn jewellery beautiful and unique.

Below you can view some of the horn jewellery that has just arrived from Colombia.

“Tagua”  seeds.

Some of the necklaces, bracelets and rings that I sell are made of “tagua”. “Tagua” seeds come from a palm  tree that grows wild in the Colombian rainforest.  When these seeds fall , they are collected .  “Tagua” seeds are  white, although they are dyed in order to create jewellery of  diverse colours .   “Tagua” seeds are also very durable, and  completely natural.  For the latter reasons, “tagua” is called “vegetal ivory”. It is a material that is an alternative to plastic, and a natural sustainable alternative to animal ivory.

See below some of the new "tagua"  pieces just arrived  into Melbourne ( for other "tagua"designs,   have a look at previous posts ) :

LONG "TAGUA" SEED NECKLACES  :  between 45 cm -50 cm length
